Saturday morning, our family, along with my Mom & Dad, participated in Serve Day at our church. Over 2000 people came together to help our community in the name of Jesus Christ. It was AWESOME! There were groups all over the county doing different jobs. Some cleaned up the beaches, others knit hats for cancer patients, some baked cookies to be delivered to shelters, while others painted pictures that will go to kids in an orphanage in Tecate, Mexico.
I consider our family doubly blessed, in that we got to serve the Lord, and help Newport Harbor High School in the process (where Matt teaches). We spent the morning picking up trash, spray painting trash cans, and cleaning out a huge warehouse that holds all the Drama department's set designs.
I loved that Serve Day wasn't just about helping others, but also bring people together. I also loved that it was intergenerational. My kids helped along with teenagers, parents and grandparents. At the end of the day, everyone was invited back to the church for a dinner from the TK Burger truck. YUM!
This is a slide show (made by the church) of all the work that took place on Saturday! Around 2:20 you can see Wyatt playing with the Memorial Bricks we helped lay under the flagpole at NHHS!
Sunday morning I ran 12.37 miles!!! Then we all went to church. The rest of the day was spent together cleaning up our backyard getting ready for an awesome Spring and Summer! My sweet husband worked his arse off ALL weekend - when he shoulda been able to rest on his days off. I love him to the moon for being the hardest worker I know, for taking such good care of us, and for setting an awesome example for our children! All in All - it was a PERFECT start to my Birthday Week!!
Today I am finishing up some orders, planting Easter Lilies and getting out all our decorations. FUN.

I love how you are teaching your children that service is important! It's one of the things I truly hope to instill in my children and try to show them in some way every day! looks like a fun time too!
That is so awesome! You are a Rockstar for doing the Serve Day (Love it!!) and for running 12.37 miles. You go girl! so proud of you!
Awesome, Erin!!
Hi Erin,
I'm over from Mel's blog. Your family is adorable! :)
We have something similar at our church the first weekend of May, that is really neat to see another church doing the same!
I was checking out your 500 in 2010 blog, if you don't mind I had a few questions for you..
How did you start out running, meaning how far or time wise did you go?
I would love to run a 5k someday, but sort of don't know where to start;) Also now that I'm in my mid 30's the junk that I've become acustomed to eating has caught up w/ me! So I'm really needing to (lose lbs.) eat healthier and exercise regularly, if only it was so easy? :)
Thanks for any advice you have!
